WILMER RENE ESTEVEZ - HONDURAS
The Aruco Cooperative was established in 2006 by 14 farmers from Corquín, Copán. In 2013, they began a micro-lot program aiming to produce high-scoring specialty coffees. Currently, Aruco has more than 200 manufacturing partners, all of whom, together with their families, are involved in production and harvesting.
The cooperative provides its members with technical assistance, financing, and international marketing of green coffee beans. This approach ensures high productivity, environmental sustainability in production, and promotes the comprehensive development of families in the region. Additionally, Aruco supports local educational, social, and public health institutions.
The cooperative owns a coffee processing station equipped with modular sections for wet processing and drying. The wet mill uses environmentally friendly gear that minimizes water consumption. The drying equipment consists of 10 horizontal guards, and hot air is obtained by burning coffee husks in special ovens.
Finca "Don Joaquín," owned by Don Wilfredo Estévez and named after his father, is one of Aruco's manufacturing partners. The farm is located in the community of Vereda Potrerillos, Corquín, Copán, at an altitude of 1,250 meters above sea level. Coffee from this region is marked with the special geographical indication (GI) of Honduran Western Coffees (HWC).
Don Wilfredo started with an area called "Manzana" where he grew fruit trees. Over time, he decided to venture into the coffee business since he had more land available. He grows Lempira, IHCAFE90, Parainema, and Red Catuaí coffee varieties. Currently, he has diversified his plot by planting timber species, fruit trees, and ornamental plants. Beyond beautifying the landscape, they provide a pleasant and conducive ecosystem for wildlife.
